Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Antigua

Our Guatemalan adventure begins with your arrival at Guatemala City’s “La Aurora” airport. We’ll have a quick one-hour shuttle ride to our charming Antigua boutique hostel organized for you. After check-in, you’ll meet your fellow travelers, and we’ll hold a trip introduction session, where we’ll provide essential information and address any questions you may have. Following this, we’ll embark on our welcome dinner, an opportunity to get better acquainted while savoring delectable local cuisine. Before retiring for the night, we’ll assist you in preparing your bags for the upcoming hiking expedition.

Day 2: Acatenango Basecamp & Fuego

Get ready for your first volcano hike! After enjoying a local breakfast at our hostel, we’ll set off on a one-hour drive to the Acatenango trailhead. The hike to base camp is expected to take 5-6 hours, with an elevation gain of 4,921 feet, bringing us to an elevation of 13,044 feet. We’ll traverse through farmlands, rainforests, and various vegetation changes, taking breaks and pausing for lunch along the way. At base camp, you’ll have time to rest and soak in the stunning views of the neighboring volcanoes while sipping on hot coco. About 1.5 hours before sunset, we’ll embark on the second hike to the active Fuego volcano, where you can witness eruptions from a safe vantage point on Fuego’s ridge. Upon returning to base camp, we’ll enjoy dinner, relax by the bonfire, and be treated to the increasingly spectacular nighttime eruptions!

Day 3: Summit Acatenango & Return to Antigua

Rise and shine! It’s 4 am, and we’ll begin a 2-hour trek to the summit of Acatenango to witness a breathtaking sunrise with panoramic views of Antigua, Lake Atitlan, and other regions of Guatemala. After sunrise, we’ll head back to base camp for breakfast, followed by a 2-hour descent to Acatenango’s trailhead. From there, we’ll be transported back to our Antigua hostel to rest. We’ll arrange for food to be delivered to us, allowing us to refuel without the need to go out again. For recovery, we recommend utilizing the hostel’s pool and sauna.

Day 4: Explore Antigua and Travel to Lago Atitlan

Wake up to breakfast at the hostel and get ready to explore Antigua, with its parks, ruins, and cobblestone streets. We’ll visit a local ruin and savor a traditional Guatemalan meal at a renowned local restaurant. After this delightful repast, we’ll embark on a 2-hour drive to Lake Atitlan, where we’ll spend the rest of the day in our lavish lakeside accommodation. This location is a haven for relaxation, boasting views of the lake, distant volcanoes, a picturesque garden with a pizza oven, a sauna, private lake access, and paddle boards.

Day 5: Atitlan Rest Day

Today marks the second day of rest following the first round of hikes, and you might be feeling some muscle soreness. Therefore, we’ve set aside this day for rest and recovery. You’ll have access to the lake, allowing you to take a refreshing dip in its crystal-clear waters, bask in the sun, or make use of the sauna. The combination of sauna and cold water is particularly soothing for sore muscles. You also have the option to explore nearby towns independently if you wish. The fridge will be stocked with fresh fruits, and you can replenish your supply of beverages.

Day 6: Hike Volcano Toliman & Little Toliman

Our second major volcano hike commences today. At 8 am, we’ll be transported by our captain to the town of Santiago on the opposite side of the lake, where our hike will begin. Expect a 4-6 hour ascent of the dormant Toliman volcano, standing at 10,361 feet. The elevation gain is roughly 4,747 feet over a 5-mile hike to the summit. After leaving our bags at the summit, we’ll proceed to the second peak, an easy 1.5-hour round trip hike, to enjoy another perspective. Returning to the summit, we’ll establish our camp for the night, witness the sunset, and relish a well-deserved dinner cooked over an open fire. For the night, you’ll want to layer up, as the summit can get quite chilly.

Day 7: Hike Volcano Atitlan

We’ll begin the day with a sunrise view over Acatenango and Fuego. After breakfast, we’ll embark on our last challenging hike up Atitlan, which is the toughest of all the volcanoes we’ve conquered. It stands at approximately 11,598 feet, with an elevation gain of 6,493 feet over a 10-mile round-trip journey marked by a consistent steep incline. This hike is shorter than the rest of the inclines but still demanding. Most likely we will be the only hikers, making this hike a serene experience. We’ll encounter various landscapes, including rainforests and a Mars-like summit. After exploring the vast summit, we’ll rest near steam pockets to warm up and have some snacks before starting our 3-hour descent. We’ll then be picked up and taken to Santiago via a quick boat ride back to our villa, where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved dinner and drinks in the evening.

Day 8: Rest Day at Lake

Having conquered all five peaks on this journey, we now have a full day dedicated to rest and recovery. Take a refreshing plunge in the lake, hone your paddle board skills, embark on a kayak adventure, soothe your sore muscles in the sauna, or opt for a relaxing massage. We’ll provide beer and wine to celebrate together after successfully summiting

Day 9: Fly Home

Savor your last moments by the lakefront, have breakfast at the villa, and then catch your airport shuttle. The drive takes about 4 hours, and your check-out time is at 11 am, marking the trip’s official conclusion. If you wish to extend your stay, we’re here to assist with accommodations and transportation arrangements!

Engage in a comprehensive fitness routine that emphasizes leg exercises, including squats and lunges, to strengthen your quads, hamstrings, and calves. I had such a life changing experience in Guatemala, traveling with On The Way Travels, that I ended up going back again as a returning customer! With intentional choices like partnering with locals, authentic experiences that aligns with my values, and hiking peaks of volcanos I have never dreamed of seeing with my own eyes, my travels to Guatemala sit comfortably at the top of my favorite travel experiences. On The Way makes group travel accommodating, personalized, authentic, and memorable. I’ve traveled internationally with a few different companies that accommodated group travel before finding On The Way, and this was by far my favorite experience. For future solo trips, I will only book with them. They offer a diverse range of activities that will push you to explore outside of your typical comfort zone, while also planning many of the highlights and experiences you love and want to do on a trip. For me, the experience was one of a kind, and a way to safely travel, while meeting like minded people. If you’re thinking about booking with On The Way Travel and want to feel that you’re getting the most out of your destination, just do it, you won’t regret it.

I traveled with this company twice and each time I had amazing experiences. The planners and guides curate the trip so that you get the most out of your time and money. It shows how much work they put into planning the experience and test things out themselves. The food is great, transportation is set up, the destinations are great, lodging is always top notch, and the people you meet are phenomenal. I met one person on my first trip that also came on the second trip and it just felt like I was able to have a little travel family. It’s amazing to be able to meet and travel with like minded people even if you sign up solo. It’s the best way to travel in my opinion. There are so many things I would’ve missed out on if I had planned it myself and I’ve traveled a lot on my own. This just takes the time wasting, money wasting, and bad experiences out of travel. I hiked Volcano Acatenango and it’s still the best and most rewarding experience I’ve had. I can’t wait to travel with On the way again! Thanks Hannah and Flow for the amazing experiences.

A unique chance to conquer a physical and mental challenge with like-minded individuals, a hell of a trip leader, and in the most beautiful natural setting. The memories I made on this trip will last a lifetime, but more importantly, inspired me to seek more and invigorated me to be more.
